## Why "node region" affects what you can access

What a node presents to the outside world is, fundamentally, an IP address — plus a set of "identity tags" attached to that IP: which region it's in, whether it's a datacenter IP, whether it's ever been flagged as a proxy/VPN. Different platforms check these tags in different ways to decide whether to let your request through. Understanding this mechanism is more useful than memorizing a list of "which region's nodes are good for what," which goes stale quickly.

## How overseas platforms restrict you

**Copyright geo-blocking**
Streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ license content on a country/region-by-region basis — the same show might be available in the US but not in Japan. This is a contractual restriction, unrelated to whether you're using a proxy — the platform is only checking "does this IP's region have rights to this content."

**Detecting datacenter/VPN IPs**
Even where copyright allows it, platforms separately check whether you're using a proxy or VPN, mainly through:
- Maintaining a continuously updated list of datacenter/VPN IPs, cross-referenced directly against IP ownership info (WHOIS) and cloud providers' published IP ranges
- Detecting whether a large number of different accounts are connecting from the same IP simultaneously — normal residential broadband doesn't show this pattern, so hitting it is a strong signal of a shared egress point
- Checking whether the IP's region matches the region of the DNS resolver it's using — a mismatch is suspicious
- Some platforms (particularly major streaming services) have added BGP routing-origin verification in the last couple of years, checking whether an IP range's claimed geographic location matches where its network traffic is actually routed from

Combined, these measures mean **ordinary cloud/VPS IPs are getting easier to block outright** — which is exactly why the "airport"/VPS community has spent the last couple of years increasingly emphasizing terms like "native IP" and "residential IP" — the underlying goal is making a node's IP look less like a datacenter. But genuine overseas residential broadband is hard to acquire at scale and costs far more, so a lot of nodes marketed as "residential" don't necessarily hold up when actually verified — this is already covered in the glossary's "residential IP" entry.

## How domestic Chinese platforms restrict you (the reverse case)

If you're overseas and want to use a node to "route back into China" to access domestic platforms (NetEase Cloud Music, Tencent Video, iQiyi, and similar), you run into the restriction in the opposite direction: most of these platforms' content is only licensed for "mainland China," and an overseas IP will typically get a message like "this content is unavailable in your region due to copyright restrictions" — the mechanism is almost identical to the Netflix example above, just pointed the other way. In this case you need a node whose exit IP is in mainland China, not an ordinary circumvention node.

Payment and financial apps (online banking, Alipay, WeChat Pay, etc.) deserve a separate mention. For anti-fraud risk-control reasons, these apps are highly sensitive to signals like "login location anomaly" or "IP doesn't match registered information" — logging in from an unfamiliar-region IP can directly trigger a risk-control freeze on the account. This is no longer a question of "can I view this content," it's an account-security-level restriction that needs more caution — it's not advisable to frequently switch nodes while using apps like these.

Some overseas services commonly used by developers (such as OpenAI's API) go the other direction and block mainland Chinese IP ranges wholesale — which is exactly why many developers need to access them through a node — and these platforms are simultaneously strengthening their detection of "traffic routed through a proxy," so how long purely technical workarounds keep working is uncertain.

## What common node regions tend to be good for

The following reflects a reasonably consistent impression from community and user feedback, **not an absolute conclusion** — quality varies a lot between different providers and different lines even within the same region:

- **Hong Kong**: geographically and network-wise closest to mainland China, usually the lowest latency, and a solid experience for everyday browsing and interacting with domestic services; but precisely because it's popular, Hong Kong airport-node IPs are also relatively more likely to get flagged by platforms.
- **Taiwan**: similarly low latency; local platforms (some Taiwanese banks, LINE TV) typically require a genuine Taiwanese IP to work properly, and datacenter IPs get blocked easily.
- **Japan**: generally a good experience for local Japanese platforms (Abema, DMM, etc.); also one of the more commonly used regions for streaming unblocking, provided the IP isn't identified as a datacenter one.
- **Singapore**: a network hub — many international services have a presence there, giving relatively balanced cross-region access, but it isn't the "optimal region" for any one specific platform.
- **United States**: almost all mainstream international platforms (the US Netflix catalog, most AI services) default to the US as their baseline region, giving the broadest compatibility — but node counts and competition are both high here, and the odds of being flagged as a datacenter IP are also somewhat higher.

This impression will shift as platforms' detection capabilities and airport line quality change over time — treat it only as a rough reference, and verify for yourself whether a specific node actually works for whatever you need it for.

## How this relates to NodeNanny
